An interview in English: phrases, structure and strategy

An interview in English: phrases, structure and strategy

An interview in English is scary not because of grammar but because of speed: you have to think, phrase and speak all at once. The good news is that the vocabulary of an IT interview is small and predictable.

A skeleton for answers

  • Opening: “Let me think for a second.” A legitimate pause that sounds professional.
  • Structure: “There are three key points here. First… Second… Finally…” The skeleton holds the answer together even when your vocabulary runs short.
  • Clarifying: “Just to make sure I understood, you’re asking about…, right?” It is better to check than to answer the wrong question.

Phrases you will always need

  • “In my experience…”, “From what I’ve seen…”: openers for talking about your experience.
  • “The main challenge was…”, “As a result…”: STAR in English.
  • “I’d be happy to elaborate”: an offer to go deeper into the topic.

Strategy

The interviewer assesses communication, not grammar. Short, simple sentences said with confidence beat complicated structures full of hesitation. Write down ready phrasings for your role in advance and rehearse them out loud. The AI copilot can show the question as subtitles and suggest a structure while you practise on real English-language interviews.
