Live subtitles for calls and meetings: accessibility and comfort

Live subtitles for calls and meetings: accessibility and comfort

Subtitles are no longer only a feature for video. Live transcription of computer audio is about accessibility, comfort and the efficiency of any voice communication.

Who needs it

  • People who are hard of hearing. Subtitles are a long-established accessibility standard (WCAG). Real-time transcription puts them on equal terms in calls.
  • Working in a second language. Text is easier to follow than fast speech in another language, especially with an accent or background noise.
  • Noisy workplaces. An office, a café, the street: subtitles help where your ears cannot keep up.
  • Lectures and webinars. Nothing gets lost, because everything is saved as text.

How it works

The app captures system audio (WASAPI loopback, so any call or video works without setup), streams it to a speech-to-text engine and draws subtitles in an overlay above all windows. Latency is measured in hundreds of milliseconds. Recognition quality for Russian and English speech is on par with professional transcription services.

What to look for in a tool

  • Latency: subtitles should lag by less than a second.
  • An overlay above all windows that stays hidden when you share your screen.
  • Automatic language detection, or quick switching between Russian and English.
